OpenAI Codex Reaches 5 Million Weekly Users with New Plugins, Sites, and Annotations

OpenAI's Codex coding agent has reached 5 million weekly users as of June 2, 2026, marking a significant milestone in AI-assisted development adoption. The company used the moment to launch three major feature expansions that push Codex well beyond its original developer audience.

First, six new role-based agent plugins are now available: Analyst, Marketer, Designer, Investor, Operations, and Researcher. These plugins integrate with 62 apps across categories including Google Workspace, Salesforce, Figma, Bloomberg Terminal, and Notion. The expansion is one of the clearest signals yet that OpenAI is preparing a direct push into professional services markets, with confirmed plans for additional Finance and Legal plugins.

Second, Codex Sites is a new hosting feature that lets users deploy static sites and documentation directly from Codex, reducing friction between code generation and deployment. Third, the new Annotations system allows teams to review, comment on, and iterate on AI-generated code and documents in a collaborative interface.

OpenAI also announced that Codex is now generally available on AWS Bedrock, giving enterprises the option to run it within their own cloud infrastructure — a critical requirement for regulated industries and government contracts.
