Microsoft Build 2026 Preview: AI Agents Take Center Stage June 2-3

Microsoft Build 2026 is set to convene June 2-3 at Fort Mason in San Francisco, and the defining theme is clear: 2025 was the year of announcing AI agents, and 2026 is the year they become production infrastructure. Satya Nadella will open the keynote with expectations around several major announcements.

The centerpiece is the Microsoft Agent Framework, now in public preview, which provides a consistent foundation for building, orchestrating, and operating agent systems across Python and .NET. The framework integrates with Azure AI Foundry, Azure OpenAI, OpenAI, and the GitHub Copilot SDK, supporting both local and cloud-hosted patterns.

Microsoft is also expected to unveil a rebuilt multi-model Copilot platform that includes Anthropic models alongside OpenAI, marking a significant shift from its OpenAI-exclusive strategy. Azure AI Foundry is getting updates for observing and governing multi-agent systems at scale, with new capabilities for monitoring agent behavior and enforcing compliance policies.

Windows-native AI capabilities are also on the agenda, with rumors of WSL 3 improvements and a Windows Agent Framework that would let developers build agents that interact directly with the operating system. The session catalog spans seven tracks, all oriented around moving developers from AI experimentation to production deployment.

For MENA developers and enterprises, Microsoft's agentic push matters because Azure has significant data center presence in the region, and these tools will be available through the same cloud infrastructure they already use.
