Google I/O 2026: Gemini Intelligence, Googlebooks, and the AI-First Android

Google I/O 2026 opens today at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California, marking what may be the company's most consequential developer conference since the launch of Android itself.

The centerpiece is Gemini Intelligence, a suite of agentic AI features that moves Gemini from a standalone chatbot into the operating system layer. Gemini Intelligence operates across applications, understands screen context, and completes multi-step tasks autonomously. Google demonstrated the system finding a class syllabus in Gmail, identifying required textbooks, and adding them to a shopping cart without switching apps. Features include Smart Autofill for contextual form completion, Rambler for AI-enhanced speech-to-text, and Create My Widget for generating custom widgets through natural language.

The second major announcement is Googlebooks, premium Android-powered laptops running Aluminium OS replacing Chromebooks after 15 years. Googlebooks feature Magic Pointer, which turns the cursor into an AI agent suggesting contextual actions, and ship this autumn from Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo.

Google also confirmed Android XR smart glasses powered by Gemini 2.5 Pro with Samsung, Warby Parker, Gentle Monster, and XREAL as hardware partners. For developers, Gemini Intelligence creates a new platform layer for agentic experiences. The EU is preparing to force Google to open Android to rival AI assistants under the Digital Markets Act.
